Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, investmnet, and journey of becoming financial independence. Getting busy (BZ) in FIRE style!
I’m a San Francisco local working in California, US as a Data Analysis and Marketing Analytics Specialist. Basically, I can code and conduct analysis from anywhere, so I spend as much time as I can traveling. Most of my wanderlust centers around people, experience and personal growth. As I said repeatedly to my friends, “The three most important way you can grow out of your current self are talking with people, reading and traveling. Since you are the average of the five people you spend time with, choose your crowd and hobby carefully.” You’ll find a lot of reflections in my “Review Insights” and “BZ Travel Diary” too. The focus of this blog will be on things that shaped the personal and professional life of me namely Real Estate, Startup, Consulting, Learning and Traveling.
I hope this blog inspires you to explore new ways of living. Feel free to reach out to me or leave a comment!
I have done a lot of ‘traditional’ good jobs - Banking, Consulting, VC and Startups. To be fair, I kinda loved all of them. Each of those positions I held along them way make me who I am today.
Banking: After working in banking, you’ll know what hard work and dedication is. You can work overtime, you can work long hours and you can get things done.
Consulting: Put that jack-of-all-trade hat on because you need to face all kinds of clients and all different situations all the time. Well, the consulting industry taught us to be a seat filler. Be able to fill any empty seats within the room and step up to the game.
Venture Capital (VC): Working in VC, you are going to see deals and investment opportunities everyday. What people value, what are the signs of a good company, what can drive the fundings… I see it as a calculated gamble of startups. It is a gamble but it is better to know the rules before you play.
Startups: Do startups and stay with it to the end - IPO, Sell, or Bankrupts. Your role will change along the journey and you can see your team evolve and company culture changes as well. Try to be on different teams or at least closely work with them. You will find yourself grow in a speed you can never see in a big company.
Then you may ask why the changes? Well, as you get older, your focus of life changes. You see life from so many different lens and absorbed experience and life lessons from your mentors, mistakes as well as achievements along the journey. Currently I am more focused on Life Resume Design instead of only finding a job I like. Luckily in the process, I found my passion in the Robotics and Warehouse Automation Industry, doing all kinds of things as a General Manager, which are the things I am good at, I love and I can make a living out of.

“Never forgot where you come from and always remember where you want to go” - This is the motto I live by. I grew up in the rural part of China and because of the hard work of my parents, I got access to better education and resources than my peers. From the village to the city, then to Hong Kong and now to the US. Step by step I am proud of the journey I’ve been through. Bit by bit, I cherish every part of the road I left my foot prints on.
Education changes life and information changes perspectives. In Chinese, there is a saying “ 宁做鸡头不做凤尾“,in English it could be “Better be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion.”, which I totally disagree in the perspective of education. The environment you are at determines your education level, peers, and access to information and resources. I’ve been through several experience of losing opportunities due to lack of information. If you compete and lose, that is bad but it is okay. What is worse is that you don’t even know there is a competition. That is just sad and unfortunate. Thus one of my life goal is to be the center of information and enrich my mind palace.
What do you want to be known/remembered for ? I constantly ask myself that question. Here are my top criteria. They may change along with time and experience but now they are what I am striving for.
A person who lives life to the fullest and who does things others only think about or talk about
A citizen of the world, who experience culture and life in a localized way
A reader who constantly in talks with great writers, absorbing their wisdom
A conversationist and a connector who can talk and listen to you all night as well as connect you with the right person
A fashionista who has his unique sense of trends
A T-shape talent who can fill any empty seat in the room but have his throne which is unshakable
Once a wise man said, if you have a goal, you’d better write it down. So that is what I am doing here. Accredited to JLD, his theory of FOCUS - Follow One Course Until Success, taught me to narrow down my new year/month resolutions to following three:
Work: prefect as my technical and business acumen, realizing the transition from individual contributor to a manager
Life: stick to the routine of Morning Session, Focus Sessions, and Evening Session - use discipline to turn my life around
Work-Life-Integration: Realize my version of Tim Ferris’s 4-hour work week.
Actionable Tips:
Industry and product learning
How to be a CEO
Improve focus session and evening session efficiency by leveraging Deep Work
Improve remote work efficiency
Instead of doing a new year resolution, I am doing a new month resolution to track my progress on those three big goals and update on actionable strategies. Wish me luck. Actually Wish me FOCUS.
